Anaesthetic Procedures

General Anaesthesia

Anaesthetic Procedures general anaesthesiaGeneral anaesthesia involves the administration of anaesthetic agents to induce a state of unconsciousness (sleep). It is a specialist procedure completed by an anaesthetist in a private hospital. Anaesthetists are medical experts in anaesthetics, drug administration, and pain management.
General anaesthesia is often required if someone is anxious about dental surgery or if the surgery is complex.

The Oral Surgery Centre works with Bay Elective Surgical Theatre (BEST) to provide general anaesthesia. The hospital was completed in 2014 and is Hawkes Bay’s newest theatre. Conveniently located at 2 Lamason Street in Greenmeadows, Napier, it is easily located and only moments away from Napier, Hastings and Havelock North. Please see our Contact page for directions.

Conscious Sedation

Also known as IV sedation or twilight sleep, conscious sedation may help patients manage during surgery. With this method, the patient is not completely asleep (general anaesthesia) but is rather very relaxed and forgetful. It is excellent for allowing patients who are willing but slightly anxious. Please speak with our team to determine if this is a suitable option.

Local Anaesthesia

Local anaesthesia is the most common drug used in dentistry and allows dentists to complete procedures like fillings, cleans, root canals and extractions. Although the patient is aware of their surroundings, any procedure completed under local anaesthesia should not be felt. Local anaesthetic is safe and very effective. Furthermore, you can simply drive to and from your dental appointment and do not require special arrangements such as an escort or fasting.
